Validate your Identity for your Code Signing Certificate

After purchasing a code signing certificate for your organization or for individual use, you need to verify your organizational or personal identity to the Certificate Authority (CA) before you can sign your code with a digital signature.

Authenticode (code signing) is not a guarantee that signed software is bug-free or even virus/malware-free. All a digital signature says is “this file has not been modified since it was signed by the publisher.” Having said that, it is worth noting that obtaining a code signing certificate is not free — companies or individuals that apply for one do have to pay a fee and do have to prove their identity to the company that issues the certificate.

A professional opinion letter is one of the verification methods, approved by Comodo, in which you have a letter written by an attorney or an accountant to verify the authenticity of your organization.
The Certificate Authority (CA) may request a POL (Professional Opinion Letter) when you apply for an organization-validated code signing certificate.
